Italy makes compulsory anti-forgetfulness of baby in cars

An anti-forgetful device for children in cars is made mandatory in Italy from Thursday on penalty of a heavy fine and the withdrawal of points on the license, announced the Ministry of Transport.

The Ministry confirmed the entry into force of new legislation requiring parents, grandparents and caregivers to ride in car seats for children under 4, an alarm mechanism to avoid forgetting in the car when the driver gets off.

The device "must be activated automatically and must be equipped with an alarm to warn the driver of the presence of the child through acoustic or visual signals with a vibrator, perceptible inside and outside the vehicle ". They may also be equipped with systems for automatically sending SMS or Whatsapp type messages or telephone calls.

A breach of the highway code

The ministry, which has provided a small help of 30 euros for the purchase of each device, recalled that motorists carrying children and who will be deprived of the mechanism will commit a violation of the rules of the road.

This offense may be punishable by a fine ranging from 81 to 326 euros and the withdrawal of 5 points on the driving license. Several equipment of this type connected to the key of the contact of the driver exist since five or six years in Italy and were put in production as a result of tragic forgetfulness of babies asleep in cars in heat wave.
