None other than jazz icon Miles Davis was responsible for bringing guitarist Mike Stern and saxophonist Bill Evans together over 40 years ago. Convinced of their skills, Davis didn’t hesitate and included the two musicians in his band in 1981. Today, Stern and Evans belong to the absolute world class of fusion jazz.
On Sunday, May 15, the two will rock the Basel Atlantis together with master bassist Tom Kennedy and jazz rocker Nicolas Viccaro on drums. The musicians, who all belong to the elite of jazz fusion instrumentalists, promise an exciting mixture of the most diverse elements of jazz, rock, blues, soul and world music. Combinations of the highest perfection that do not stop at borders and underline the impressive skills of each individual.
Far beyond the limits of traditional jazz
Multi-Grammy nominee Mike Stern began his career in the 1970s with the pop-rock formation Blood, Sweat & Tears. In the course of his subsequent solo career he has worked with so many musicians of different genres that he has mastered all styles to perfection. Even an accident in 2016, in which he broke both humerus bones, couldn’t stop him from continuing his passion.
By playing together with very different individual musicians and bands, Evans also moved far beyond the boundaries of traditional jazz at an early stage. During his 20-year solo career, he received multiple Grammy nominations, including for his 2005 recording “Soulgrass,” a groundbreaking fusion of jazz and American roots music. Always on the lookout for exciting connections and contexts, Evans always creates new combinations.
Just one day after this concert, on May 16th, the Basel Jazz Festival is coming up with another highlight. Joe Lovano, one of the most valued and versatile tenor saxophonists, will present some of his most personal compositions at Don Bosco. Lovano is accompanied by pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Carmen Castaldi.
