GENT

The spread of the coronavirus among the inhabitants of Ghent is now officially greater than in the previous waves. How is the fight against the corona virus in Ghent going? Read this very short summary and you’ll be back.

Bert Staes

1. The fourteen-day average of infections among the inhabitants of Ghent is at the highest point since the figures from Sciensano are known. This means that the spread of the coronavirus among the inhabitants of Ghent is now also higher in figures than in the previous waves.

2. The virus has also continued to circulate strongly among the inhabitants of Ghent in recent days, which can be seen from the positivity ratio. It stays above ten percent. It is therefore not clear whether we are already at the peak of this wave.

3. The pressure in hospitals has been steadily increasing for weeks. There are no figures for the Ghent hospitals, but 360 corona patients are currently being cared for in a hospital in East Flanders. That is not as many as in the past waves, which is due to the large-scale vaccination.

4. Speaking of vaccines: after a hesitant period, giving the booster shots will finally start to pick up steam in Ghent. The vaccination center in Flanders Expo will reopen on 1 December. The first weeks are already fully booked with Ghent over-65s, who should all be invited by now. There will be 2,500 boosters per day. Information about the younger Gentenaars should follow later.
