Jordan: Torrential rains leave ten dead and forced to evacuate hundreds of civilians

Amman The Jordanian Government raised to 10 the number of deaths recorded in the last 24 hours by floods caused by torrential rains in several areas in Jordan , while hundreds of citizens, including many tourists, were evacuated.

Most of the floods took place in the south of Jordan, especially in the city of Petra, one of the seven wonders of the world, as well as in the regions of Daba, Wala and Madaba, where a large number of tourists were rescued by the Civil Defense and the Army, said the Jordanian Minister of State for the Media, Yumana Gunaimat.

The minister, quoted by the state agency Petra, did not offer more details about the state or the exact number of evacuees in those areas.

He did say that the schools and mosques in the country are equipped to receive some 1,100 evacuees who were rescued in several areas of the country. Jordan, without specifying which.

The minister yesterday asked citizens living in low-lying areas and valleys to "evacuate their homes for the sake of their safety" and added that "all trips to tourist areas have been canceled on Saturday" due to bad weather conditions.

These floods occurred two weeks after the force of the torrential rains killed 21 people, most of them children, who were traveling on a bus that was dragged by a torrent in the Dead Sea area, one of the points lowest on earth.

The government of Jordan He admitted his responsibility for that event, since the vehicle did not have permission to move in that area, and the Minister of Tourism, Lina Annab, and Education, Azmi Mahafzah, resigned.
