Hünegg Openair | July 23, 2022

On July 30th, the festival enters the 37th round with new management. After 32 years as President, Pierre Frutiger is handing over the reins to his successor, Mey Geiger. The acts in the program once again promise exclusivity and enjoyment for the ears.

Pierre Frutiger, head of the Hünegg Openair since 1990, is now giving up the office of president after 32 years, the management writes in a press release. «Pierre, an interested and very well connected music lover, has always understood how to bring new, previously unknown bands to the pavilion stage with a great deal of flair and mostly on a small budget, some of which have since taken off.» He always managed the cooperation with the authorities, community and neighbors with great sensitivity. «Pierre, we thank you for all the great musical experiences and your work for ‘üses Hünegg’!»

The Hünegg Openair has been run by the Poly Magoo association since 1990. The well-rehearsed team has grown together and is constantly passing on its experience to younger participants. “Bettina Geiger has also been there since 1990 and organizes the bar. Her daughter Mey was there when she was a small child and has helped at the bar in recent years.” Mey Geiger (22) is now taking over Pierre Frutiger’s area of responsibility. Geiger has been playing the piano for years, is a trained singer and is a member of various bands herself. “Music is my passion and I am delighted to be able to take over the traditional post from Pierre,” says Geiger. The organizing committee around Pierre Frutiger, Reto Weber, Bettina Geiger, Mey Geiger, François Villet, Christoph Stricker and Marcel Ueltschi are confident about the future of the exquisite open air event.

Unique combinations embody program

As in previous years, the main act will appear again this year with guests who only appear in this combination for the Hünegg Openair, which makes this concert an exclusivity. From 10:15 p.m. until just after midnight, the Swiss pop star Shem Thomas, who made it to number five in the Swiss album charts with his new album «8», will be appearing with guests. On the one hand, he is accompanied by Céline Hales – a singer-songwriter so approachable that one feels as if one has known her for a long time. The heart of her sound is her soulful and powerful voice, which never ceases to surprise. On the other hand, Shem Thomas appears together with Recha-Maria. Due to her enthusiasm for vocal tones, Recha-Maria from Thun has developed a diverse repertoire of vocal expressions, which she knows how to use very effectively. On her musical path she dealt with classical music as well as with soul, jazz, pop/rock and gospel.

The alternative pop/rock group “Cove Diamond” from the region will play as the second band at 8 p.m. The songs of the newcomer band literally float over the waves of Lake Thun. Powerful basses, dreamy melodies, spherical carpets of sound and a warm, friendly voice form a mix of rock, pop, experimental, and a refreshing breeze of the 80s in catchy songs.

The regional-international rock, folk and soul band “People the People” with Jan Imboden (vocals and guitar), Lewis Slinger (vocals, guitar, flute), Max Nyafli (bass) and Alessandro Alarcon (drums) open at 6.30 p.m. the 37th Hünegg Openair with its “Good Vibes” sound and invite the arriving visitors to dance and enjoy.
