SLeading Liverpool FC has extended its lead in the English Premier League with another win. Jürgen Klopp’s team defeated archrival Manchester United 2-0 (1-0) at home on Sunday, making another big step towards the first football championship in 30 years. After the prestige success, the “Reds” are 16 points ahead of the champions and second in the table, Manchester City, who had left points again in Sunday’s 2-2 (0-1) against Crystal Palace.
Liverpool, who played one game less than the competition, deservedly won with a header from Virgil van Dijk (14th minute) and a late goal from Mohamed Salah (90th + 3rd).
“This is a great relief,” said Klopp. “We were brilliant. We determined the game, especially in the first half. The energy we put on the pitch was incredible. ”
In the first half, the ball landed two more times. But a Roberto Firmino goal was denied after video evidence because van Dijk had previously fouled United goalkeeper David de Gea. At Georginio Wijnaldum’s goal the referee raised the flag for an offside position. The “Reds” had several opportunities to increase in the second half, but thanks to de Gea it remained 1-0 until Salah finally made the decision in added time.
Record champions Manchester United, who had to get along without the striker Marcus Rashford in Anfield, had little chance against the Liverpoolers, who were superior in almost every respect. The team of coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who won Liverpool’s only draw in the first leg so far, remains in fifth place in the table.
