Kuwait City | The Interior Ministry is reportedly preparing to increase fees for certain services in Kuwait. Ministry sources said that a memorandum requesting an increase in fees from the Transport and Housing Departments will be submitted to First Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nawaf Assabah soon. This includes services including visitor visas. However, the new fee structure is not included in the memorandum. The Al Anba daily quoted top officials as saying that if the minister approves the fee increase in principle, a detailed proposal will be submitted, including the new rate.
The budget deficit and low revenue are pushing the government to increase fees. Experts advise that fee hikes and subsidy cuts for certain services be needed to deal with the current adverse situation. Some ministries have already implemented service fee hikes. The government is also considering spending controls on subsidized items.
