KV Mechelen immediately set out the lines in the Kehrwegstadion, but it was Eupen that opened the score early. Lambert got too much space on a corner by Peeters and headed the ball into the goal untenable.
It was almost 2-0 before the quarter of an hour. Another corner kick, again Lambert was able to head. Hairemans just turned the ball off the line and Prevljak couldn’t decide in the restart. KV Mechelen escaped and struck after 20 minutes. Schoofs perfectly caught up to a pass from Walsh at the near post and scored the equalizer beautifully.
Shortly before halftime, the lights went out at Amat. After a clear penalty violation and a yellow card for protest, the Eupen captain went even further. Even before the penalty was given, Amat took a second yellow card for a strong push to Vanlerberghe. Mrabti forgot to push the knife even deeper, he aimed the penalty at the post.
KV Mechelen was unable to exploit the numerical superiority after the break and even escaped when Peeters hit the post after a clumsy loss of the ball. It was only after more than an hour that Eupen got warm, but Nurudeen had a great reflex on a header from Walsh.
The visitors did not come closer to 1-2. Deep in the extra time, KV Mechelen even escaped defeat. Coucke was able to tap a surprising shot by Magnée over the bar and the same Magnée hit the post shortly afterwards.
