Airbnb announced on Wednesday that it has hired the company of former Apple star designer Jony Ive to work on showcasing the upcoming products and services of the peer-to-peer rental platform.
The man who, alongside Steve Jobs for several decades, designed the shape of the iMac, iPod and iPhone, left the computer giant in June 2019 before setting up his own firm , “LoveFrom”.
Jony Ive has established a “special collaboration” with Airbnb which is to run over several years, said the chief executive and co-founder of the platform, Brian Chesky, in a statement.
An icon in Silicon Valley, he will also help Airbnb develop the internal design team.
“We share the same beliefs about the value and importance of creativity and design,” said Brian Chesky, himself an industrial design graduate.
“We believe not only in the creation of objects and interfaces, but also in the creation of services and experiences.”
The announcement of this collaboration comes as the platform prepares to go public, normally by the end of the year.
Shaken up at the start of the pandemic by the measures imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19, Airbnb has since seen demand pick up from Internet users looking for a getaway not far from home or a place to telecommute.
