A large international crackdown in the field of human trafficking, carried out between July 5 and 9, led to the arrest of 286 suspects and the dismantling of 22 criminal groups, Interpol announced on Monday.

“Operation Liberterra is a five-day overview of the situation of this international trafficking and the main motivation of these very well organized criminal networks: profit”, said in a statement Jürgen Stock, secretary general of the international organization. of police cooperation, headquartered in Lyon.

“With 22 dismantled criminal groups, it also shows what can be achieved through comprehensive, coordinated action by the police,” he added.

Coordinated by Interpol, Operation Liberterra mobilized law enforcement agencies from 47 countries, allowing some 500,000 inspections at checkpoints or airports, as well as in priority areas identified by the intelligence services.

It thus made it possible to save 430 victims of human trafficking and to identify 4,000 illegal immigrants from 74 different countries.

A large number of them needed housing assistance, medical and psychological assistance and were taken care of in this regard by dedicated services.

As part of the operation, Sudanese authorities rescued 253 people and arrested 32 suspects, while Tunisian coastguards assisted 69 African migrants after receiving a distress call from the boat carrying them.

60 new transnational investigations were opened as a result of this joint operation, supported in particular by the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations Office against Drugs and Crime and the European agency specializing in the suppression of crime. Europol.
