Once the disease was detected, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of New Aquitaine mandated a local company specializing in mosquitoes, to carry out research.
“These investigations have demonstrated the presence of tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) potentially vectors of this disease in the municipalities concerned ”, indicates the prefecture. After biting an infected individual, the insects themselves become capable of transmitting dengue fever to other individuals by bite.
Mosquito control operation
The press release recalls that“We can reduce by 80% the risk of the mosquito being present near his home, and therefore of being bitten” thanks to “Everyone’s vigilance” and “Some simple gestures”. It is particularly recommended to remove or empty all places and objects that can retain rainwater, details France 3. The females of the tiger mosquito lay their eggs in this type of environment which thus contribute to the proliferation of the species.
The prefect’s services were also to launch a mosquito control operation on the night of Thursday 16 July to Friday 17 July. “Within a radius of 150 meters around the places where the presence of the mosquito has been highlighted”. The inhabitants living in these areas received by mail information on the device and the products used.
