Luigi Di Maio, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, spoke about the death on Monday near Goma of Luca Attanasio, his country’s ambassador to the DRC.
“Today is a dark and sad day for our country. We learned with great dismay and immense pain of the death of our ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luca Attanasio, and of a soldier of the Army of the gendarmes, Vittorio Lacovacci, ”he said.
“Two servants of the state who were taken from us with violence in the performance of their duty. The circumstances of this brutal attack are not yet known and no effort will be spared to shed light on what happened. I will report to Parliament as soon as possible to clarify what happened. Today, the State mourns the loss of two of its exemplary children and joins their families and friends and colleagues.
The diplomat was on board the convoy that was attacked early in the morning in Nyiragongo territory. Shot and wounded, he was admitted to Monusco hospital where death was confirmed. The same sources confirm the death of his bodyguard and of the PAM driver who was behind the wheel of the vehicle in which Luca Attanasio was.
