With goals from Riyad Mahrez (53) and Julián Álvarez (58), Manchester City eliminated Chelsea (2-0) in the highlight of the round of 32 of the English League Cup, a round in which they were left out illustrious as Arsenal and Tottenham.
The ‘Gunners’, leaders of the Premier League, lost 3-1 at home against Brighton, while Tottenham (4th in the championship) lost 2-0 at Nottingham Forest, bottom of the English league.
Liverpool and Newcastle (3rd in the Premier) suffered to get into the round of 16, needing penalties to eliminate Derby County and Crystal Palace, respectively.
Tuesday had already seen the surprising eliminations of Everton, humiliated by Bournemouth (4-1), and Brentford, who lost on penalties to a fourth-tier team, Gillingham.
The round will be completed on Thursday with the visit of Aston Villa to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.
