The Boston Celtics will be without two of their starters for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat.
Marcus Smart (right midfield, foot sprain) and Al Horford (health and safety protocols) are ruled out for Tuesday night’s matchup, the team announced.
Smart had been listed as questionable after injuring his foot in Boston’s Game 7 victory over Milwaukee. Horford’s designation on the injury report comes as an unpleasant surprise to Boston fans, as the veteran big man was key to the Celtics’ success against the Bucks. It is the third time he has entered health and safety protocols this season.
With Smart and Horford out, the Celtics will have to rely heavily on guards Derrick White and Payton Pritchard, as well as centers Robert Williams and Daniel Theis. Williams missed Games 4-6 of the Bucks series because of pain in his surgically repaired left knee.
The start of Game 1 is scheduled for 8:30 pm ET. Coverage begins right away on NBC Sports Boston with Celtics Pregame Live at 7:30 p.m.
