MARKETS EUROPE / Small gains despite weaker Ifo index

DJ MÄRKTE EUROPA / Small gains despite weaker Ifo index

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones) – The European stock markets started the new week with small gains. The DAX gained 0.4 percent to 15,599 points, the Euro-Stoxx-50 closed practically unchanged at 4,188.

The Ifo business climate index, which fell again and was at the same time somewhat below expectations, hardly had a negative impact, as did a further weakened Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI). On the other hand, the unexpectedly stable business climate in Belgium also fizzled out. The markets have already priced in some economic slowdown, commented one trader.

The Commerzbank meanwhile spoke of a warning signal with a view to the Ifo. In this environment, eyes are particularly on Thursday’s Governing Council meeting. The ECB is likely to endeavor on the one hand to allay inflation worries and on the other hand to dampen the rate hike fantasy, according to expectations in retailers.

Ölpreise auf Siebenjahreshoch

As oil prices continued to rise, the oil and gas stocks sector rose 1 percent and the commodities sector rose 1.8 percent. Both Brent and US oil rose to their highest levels in over seven years after Saudi Arabia spoke out against significant increases in production, citing possible economic setbacks due to the pandemic. Recently, however, oil prices have come back significantly, at least from the daily highs.

The winner of the day was the auto sector with a plus of 2.3 percent. Another driver was the fantasy of an IPO of the VW subsidiary Porsche AG. Porsche SE Holding rose in price by 4.7 percent, as did VW. The latest trigger for speculation was an article in Manager Magazin the previous week. BMW gained 2.2 percent.

According to preliminary figures and a lowering of the annual forecast, Continental gave way by 1.1 percent. According to Berenberg, the company is taking into account the uncertainties surrounding the supply chain problems. The forecast cut does not come as a surprise.

Airbus lost 1.6 percent against the market. Dealers referred to statements by the leasing companies Avolon and Aercap, which warned of overly high production plans because the demand for new aircraft would initially remain subdued.

Zooplus-Bieter machen gemeinsame Sache

In the bidding competition for the online pet supplies retailer Zooplus, the financial investors Hellman & Friedman and EQT are now offering 480 euros per Zooplus share. Hellman & Friedman had recently increased their own offer to 470 euros or a total of around 3.6 billion euros. Zooplus rose by 0.7 percent to EUR 478.60.

With a premium of 5.8 percent, Jungheinrich reacted in late trading to further increased annual targets. The company is now aiming for an EBIT of 340 to 370 instead of 300 to 350 million euros.

Adva Optical fell 3.2 percent after the business figures were presented. The company benefited in the third quarter from stronger demand from telecommunications service providers, but costs for the planned Adtran merger depressed the operating result. According to the figures, Bechtle noted very firmly. The price rose 5.4 percent. The turnover was slightly and the profit increased significantly more than expected.

HSBC steigert Gewinn und kündigt Aktienrückkaufprogramm an

HSBC Holdings was up 1.9 percent after the bank more than doubled net income in the third quarter year over year. The Asian-focused credit institution also announced a share buyback program with a volume of up to $ 2 billion.

After the failure of the talks between the Italian government and the Unicredit bank (-1.7%) about the sale of the nationalized Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena to Unicredit, shares in the world’s oldest bank fell by 2.4 percent below. Various media reports in the past few days had already suggested a failure.

Euro schwächelt

On the foreign exchange market, the euro came back after the Ifo index fell again and in the run-up to the ECB meeting. Meanwhile, the lira initially continued to fall. After the depreciation to an all-time low in response to an unexpectedly violent and obviously politically motivated key rate cut, the latest political tensions now weighed on the country. The dollar climbed to a record level of 9.8519 lira after the threatened expulsion of ten diplomats from western countries from Turkey. In late trading, however, the lira recovered.
