Marseille: two former legionnaires tried for the kidnapping and rape of an LGBT activist

Graham Shrubb, one of the legionnaires tried since Friday, at the assizes in Aix-en-Provence acknowledged the violence, but 100% disputes the rape.

The victim’s story

Two ex-legionnaires have been on trial since Friday at the assizes in Aix-en-Provence. And for good reason: they are accused of having kidnapped and abused a man met in a bar in a hotel room in Marseille. Graham Shrubb, one of them allegedly raped Zak Ostmane, an Algerian activist LGBT while his sperm was found on the victim’s underpants. “Hardly had the first sip of beer, I received a blow in the face which knocked me unconscious and when I came to, he was sodomizing me”said the 42-year-old man, author of the book Genre Interdit and founder of the Shams association which helps homosexuals in the Middle East and North Africa.

A blow to the face

The facts occurred on March 5, 2017. Zak Ostmane, face in blood, calls for help from the window of a hotel on the Place de l’Opéra in Marseillereports 20 Minutes. On the stand, the victim said he followed Graham Shrubb for a drink home after drinking four pints at a bar. On the way, they were joined by a second man, Alejandro Salazar, a Chilean who had just deserted from the Foreign Legion. “Hardly had the first sip of beer, I received a blow in the face which knocked me unconscious and when I came to, he was sodomizing me”explained the forties.

Confessions

Zak Ostmane claims to have been the victim of numerous blows by the two men, not to mention the theft of his chain, his bank card, and the extortion of his code. “I recognize 100% the violence and I am extremely sorry to have struck and injured the victim, but I 100% deny the rape”, Graham Shrubb, 35, said from the inmate box. For his part, Alejandro Salazar, 29, acknowledged the violence, “but not the homosexual motives”. He was described by the Legion as “a follower” unlike Graham Shrubb, described as “leader”. He was fired from the Legion for his cocaine addiction and bouts of violence. The verdict is due on Tuesday.
