Matthias Ginter came to the Freiburg football school as a junior, went through all the SC youth teams and won the DFB junior club cup with the U19s in 2011 and 2012. As an 18-year-old, Ginter made his professional debut in January 2012 and scored the 1-0 winner in the game against FC Augsburg. The central defender has played 81 competitive games in the Freiburg jersey so far.
In July 2014, Ginter moved to Borussia Dortmund. He played 102 games for BVB in the Bundesliga, Cup, Champions League and Europa League and won the DFB Cup in 2017. From 2017 to date, he has made 178 appearances for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the same competitions.
Matthias Ginter made his debut for the German national team as a SC professional in 2014, was the youngest member of the world champion team from Brazil and has played 46 games in DFB dress to date. Together with Nils Petersen, he won the silver medal in Rio de Janeiro with the Olympic soccer team in 2016.
“The contact with Matze never broke off and his connection to his homeland was always there, both geographically and in terms of sport,” says sports director Klemens Hartenbach. “Of course, we know Matze’s qualities very well, but we will approach the cooperation with healthy and realistic expectations. Matze can give our defense stability and his footballing skills can also be good for us in opening the game. Together with Matze, we as a team and club would like to tackle the big challenges of the coming season.”
Matthias Ginter himself says: “I wanted to do something very special in my career and there is nothing more special for me than returning to the sports club and to my home country. The development of the entire club, the potential of the team and the special way and the way we exchanged ideas with those responsible for the club over the past few weeks – to find all of this in my home country can be described as a stroke of luck these days. This overall package was just perfect.”
