The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, said this Monday that the maritime invasion thwarted on Sunday by his Government, had as his “central objective” his assassination.
“The objective was to assassinate me, the main objective (of the invasion) was to kill the President of Venezuela. It was a terrorist attack in the middle of a pandemic, while the people were at peace. A terrorist attack against the tranquility and peace of Venezuela “, said.
Nicolás Maduro was speaking during a videoconference of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, in which strategies were addressed to combat the covid-19 pandemic.
Also this Monday, the Venezuelan Government held the United States and Colombia responsible for the “unpredictable consequences” of the alleged failed attempt at maritime invasion.
“Venezuela holds the governments of Donald Trump (USA) and Iván Duque (Colombia) responsible for the unpredictable and dangerous consequences of this wave of mercenary provocations and aggressions against the Venezuelan people and ratifies its indeclinable decision to defend the territory, sovereignty, democracy and the peace of the Venezuelan people, “reads a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In the document, released in Caracas, Venezuela begins by denouncing to the international community what it says is “a new mercenary and terrorist aggression”, organized from Colombia and planned by American agents.
In the note, it is added that the Armed Forces thwarted on Sunday an attempt to land mercenaries in the coastal zone of the State of La Guaira (former Vargas, north of Caracas) with the purpose of “executing terrorist actions”.
According to the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, eight of the invaders were shot and two others detained, and several types of weapons and vehicles were also seized.
One of the detainees, according to the statement, confessed to being a former US agency to fight drug trafficking (DEA).
“This new attack is in addition to the escalation of aggressive actions and provocations organized by the United States against Venezuela, such as the unjustifiable as the gigantic military deployment of the Southern Command in the waters of the Caribbean Sea”, also highlights Venezuelan diplomacy.
In the statement, Venezuela warns the Security Council and other UN bodies of this escalation and violations of resolutions against the use of mercenaries to violate human rights and hinder the exercise of peoples’ right to self-determination, in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic. .
