Metaverse: the next evolution of the internet and the human experience

The future of consumer technology could be transformed with the promotion of the metaverse, a concept that mixes reality and technology, promoted in particular by the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the social network’s parent company will now be called Meta. This marks an important strategic goal for Zuckerberg, namely the promotion of the Metaverse. It uses technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality to create new digital experiences. But why is the metaverse important?

The Metaverse is a new name for the next generation of the internet, where everyday reality will be merged with realistic 3D digital experiences using augmented reality and virtual reality glasses. People will be able to come together in virtual offices, hold virtual conferences and the entertainment industry will be transformed.

Basically, people will function in this space as avatars, digital identities, which they can personalize and control through augmented reality or virtual reality technologies. It will also lead to the digitization and transformation of economies, if this concept is adopted by businesses.

“There are countless examples of the digitization of the economy, which will lead to a phenomenal explosion of the computer industry around the world. To be a major player in this phenomenon, Romania must learn from it. We need to guide every child who understands math and algorithms to computer science, to the technology of the future. This is what will have to be done and there we will have to make efforts to orient them towards these professions. There are so many specializations that produce graduates who cannot find jobs. I’m not saying that there is no need for other specializations, but we have to focus on what the job market demands, ”he said. Daniel Metz Chairman of the Board of Directors, NTT DATA Romania.

Pandemic has transformed the way businesses do business. Offices have moved to home, and communication takes place through digital channels such as email, Slack, or video conferencing apps like Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

The next evolution for businesses, after learning the lessons of the pandemic, would be to go fully digital with the help of the metaverse. Companies will no longer have physical offices, but virtual offices where employees can meet using their avatars. It recreates some of the desktop connection and real interaction. To do this, companies will need to provide their employees with devices such as virtual reality headsets, but, according to the promoters of the Metaverse, these will become as common as smartphones. Additionally, IT divisions will need to create a comfortable digital world for employees.

“People are more productive at home than expected. Some people thought it was all going to fall apart, but it didn’t. A lot of people think they’re more productive now, ”said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta.

For the past two years, people in many countries have not been able to see their favorite artists due to the postponement or cancellation of some concerts. Entertainment is essential for people’s mental health. This is why metaverse can be used to organize concerts of the greatest artists in the world without having to cross countries.

The concept is not even new: it has been used in games like Roblox and Fortnite, where virtual concerts were held in the presence of American star Ariana Grande. We also had hologram concerts, but also virtual influencers, which are digital creations that have been given a specific personality. Hatsune Miku is a 100% virtual pop artist, created by a studio.

Thus, the future could bring not only concerts in the metaverse, but also the development of artificially created virtual identities, and real and virtual artists will be able to perform on the same stage.

One of the first large-scale implementations of the idea of virtual reality was in the field of education. During the pandemic, we saw that students struggled to do well online and teachers failed to convey information correctly. But even before 2020, concepts were being developed that students could be educated using virtual reality, especially for complex subjects like chemistry or biology. For example, atoms, molecules, or the human body could be explained more easily using digital 3D images that students could follow through a VR device.

Thus, in the future of the internet, that is to say this metaverse, education, as well as training in complex fields like medicine, could be modified. Students would no longer need to go to labs to do experiments or see the human body, everything could be recreated using digital technology. However, some voices have cautioned against the metaverse as it will reduce actual human interactions and the difference between reality and digital will become unrecognizable.
