Colleges, associations and federations of doctors expressed their disapproval “and energetic protest” before the announcement of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) from hire Cuban doctors due to the supposed lack of health personnel that Mexico has.
Through a statement, the Mexican doctors considered the action a “serious fault”, as they pointed out that there are health professionals in the country with capacity endorsed by universities“trained in full knowledge of the needs and idiosyncrasies” of the population that are unemployed or workers with “very low” wages or in areas of extreme insecurity.
“Because of this we consider that they have been unfairly relegated, favoring foreign doctorsalso ignoring the academic capacity of our universities”
The health personnel indicated that they will continue to work, together with the Government of Mexico, in the care of patients affected by COVID-19“risking our lives and that of our families, on many occasions buying our personal protective equipment”.
For this reason, the announcement of the federal president was “an offense” to them, since, they assured, foreign doctors do not meet the required skillsthey do not have duly specified functions, they do not have the requirements established by the current laws, as well as they lack the endorsement of professional associations”.
They also stated that their intervention has not represented benefit for the attention of the population“and if it is a serious inequity for the doctors of our country”.
“In the pandemic we saw that we were able to join forces, so we are sure that Mexicans, supported by doctors, nurses and all the country’s health personnel, we will continue to move forward as a nation”, the professionals concluded in the text.
And it is that last Monday, May 9, the president López Obrador reported that his administration will hire 500 medical specialists of Cuba with the aim of guaranteeing health in all the states of the country.
“We are going to hire more than 500 doctors who are already going to be working to fulfill the purpose we have made of guaranteeing the right to health, medical care, medicines, free clinical tests for those who do not have social security and we have already started. , but we have this deficit that we are solving”
The federal president explained that in the neoliberal period public education was not supported and they wanted to put it at the service of the market, so that those who had the resources to pay school fees could have access to it, “at the same time as spaces were closed in public universities and thousands of students were rejected with the lie that they did not pass the entrance exam”.
The foregoing, continued AMLO, affected the training of general practitioners and specialists, and as a consequence, there is a shortage of personnel despite the fact that there are hospitals to serve, above all, the Mexican population that lives in the most vulnerable areas.
However, doctors and opposition figures criticized the hiring of foreign health personnel, They assured that there are enough doctors in the country to achieve the objective of the chief executive.
“In fact, there are unemployed, including many who fought in the pandemic,” said Alejandro Macías, a recognized specialist in the country.
The doctor and deputy for the National Action Party (PAN), Ector Jaime Ramirez Barbaregretted that AMLO wants to hire foreigners when there are “less than 20 thousand places offered in the Examination N. of Applicants for Medical Residences, out of 30 thousand promised”.
