IIn the 1940s, Hannah Arendt developed the idea of a federation between a Jewish and an Arab state in Palestine in articles for the German-Jewish, New York-based emigrant newspaper “Aufbau”. To be viable, this union should become part of a Mediterranean federation. In it, the Jews “were given back their dignity and their position among the peoples of the Mediterranean, to whose cultural framework they have contributed so much”.
