The picture is cold in the back and we think we are in a war zone. However, this photo was taken yesterday via Borgo Palazzo, in the center of Bergamo (Italy). On it are several military vehicles lined up to transport the coffins from the city’s crematorium to crematoriums in other regions.
Indeed, as La Repubblica explains, the city of Bergamo, which is most affected by the coronavirus, is overwhelmed by the situation. The mortuary, the cemetery and the crematorium (there is only one turning 24 hours a day) cannot manage the massive arrival of the coffins. Due to lack of space, the city was forced to align the coffins of the deceased in the church inside the cemetery.
The only solution found to deal with the emergency and relieve Bergamo was the transport of the coffins by the army to other regions of Italy. This gives rise to this strong and symbolic image of the drama currently experienced by the country hardest hit by the epidemic in Europe.
