Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site of the collapse of the suspension bridge on Machunadi in Morbi, Gujarat. The Prime Minister conducted an aerial survey over Machunadi where the rescue operation is ongoing. Modi also visited the Morbi Civil Hospital where the injured were treated. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was also with the Prime Minister. After this, a high-level meeting will be held to assess the situation.
Meanwhile, a picture emerged of the board displaying the name of the Oriva Group, which was responsible for the maintenance and operation of the bridge, being covered with a white plastic sheet ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit. This comes amid opposition allegations that the Prime Minister’s visit two days after the accident was an event management programme.
Earlier, pictures and videos of Morbi Civil Hospital being visited by the Prime Minister and being cleaned on war footing were released. The Congress and AAP alleged that this was to do a photo shoot for the Prime Minister at the hospital.
So far 135 people have died in the accident. Rescue operation is going on. Nine people were arrested in connection with the accident. The Oriva Group, which was responsible for the maintenance and operation of the bridge, was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
The bridge at Morbi, 300 km from the capital Gandhinagar, collapsed at 6.30 pm on Sunday. The 233 meter long bridge built in 1877 was opened on 26th after 7 months of repairs. It is reported that the bridge did not get the fitness certificate from the municipality. Palam, the main tourist attraction of the region, was quite crowded as it was a Sunday. Most of the dead are women and children.
