The thrill of going to a second-hand store is the possibility that you will find a hidden gem that jumps like an extremely welcome surprise. A woman was certainly surprised by a beautiful ornament she bought at a thrift store, but she could never have guessed what it would be.
Priscilla Bailey lives in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and was a great second-hand shopper. He always liked to search among several items in the hope of being lucky, and as such he felt an almost magnetic compulsion to enter and search every time he passed through a second-hand store.
Priscilla had a particular inclination towards the unique and unusual, and finding something that seemed to be truly unique was the reason she went shopping second-hand in the first place.
In addition to being a great bargain hunter, Priscilla also had a deep love for the color blue, so if she could ever find a unique trinket that was also blue, it was a real day for her.
One day, during the holiday season, Priscilla was walking through a charity shop when something really caught her attention. The more he looked at it, the more Priscilla knew it was the perfect Christmas decoration for her, and he had to take it home.
Priscilla was very interested in bringing this ornament home, but worried that it was a bit expensive. After all, even though he was in a thrift store, this tchotchke was beautiful: a blue heart magnificently made of glass and metal.
He took his breath away from Priscilla. As such, he expected it to cost him a penny. However, when he looked at the price, Priscilla was surprised that it only cost two dollars. That sealed the deal, and Priscilla broke it.
All the way home, Priscilla had a buzz in her heart and a spring in her path. He had done what he most liked to do: find something beautiful and unique, and also an absolute steal!
Upon returning home, I was extremely interested in seeing it more closely, so he took it out and began checking it. The heart was really beautiful: the blue crystal shone and shone while the ornate engravings gave it an air of elegance.
However, when Priscilla turned the glass from side to side, examining it in her hands, she noticed something a little strange. The heart was a pretty heavy ornament, but after closer inspection, Priscilla noticed that it also seemed to contain a hollow space.
This was particularly disconcerting, and Priscilla looked at him carefully to see if there was anything inside. However, there seemed to be nothing remarkable, and Priscilla simply hung up the ornament, forgetting the hollow part.
One day, Priscilla's daughter, Kat, came to visit her. Kat had always been a big fan of glass art, to the point that she had really set up a glassblowing business. As such, Priscilla was particularly excited to show Kat her beautiful new find and see what she thought of him.
He showed Kat the ornament and also asked him what he thought about the hollow space he had noticed. After all, who better than Kat to solve this mystery?
When her mother showed her the ornament, Kat was really impressed. The crystal was beautiful, a rich and beautiful blue that was exciting to look at. In addition, the metalwork was skillful and worked perfectly with the color and brightness of the glass.
However, Kat was also quite perplexed by the weight. The ornament certainly seemed hollow, but it was too heavy for anything in it. Kat was confused about this when she decided to get a flashlight and solve it.
Light the way
When Kat returned with the flashlight, Priscilla was very excited, wondering why she hadn't thought about that. However, I was eager to discover what was really going on with my heart. Priscilla raised her heart to Kat, who lit her and looked to see what had been revealed.
As both Priscilla and Kat had thought, the heart had a hollow compartment; In fact, he had two. Priscilla and Kat tried to see what was inside, and when they did they could not believe what they saw.
Priscilla and Kat looked at each other, trying to confirm that they had both seen what they thought they had. Inside the compartments, moving as Priscilla moved them, they looked like ashes.
This surprised both Priscilla and Kat, who were not sure what to think about the content. They did not know if the ashes were a monument to someone who had died, or if they could have come from somewhere else. Either way, they were shocked.
Priscilla could not believe that this heart could have been a funeral urn. The first time I had seen it, it seemed to be nothing more than a truly beautiful ornament, and I was delighted to be able to take it home.
Now, he was faced with the fact that he could contain the ashes of someone disappeared long ago, and if that were the case, he had no way of knowing who those ashes were. Priscilla was speechless, unsure of what to do with her heart.
The revelation that the heart contained ashes was extremely strange to Priscilla, and he found it more than a bit morbid. I was so excited and delighted with the trinket when I first saw it, and I was even more excited when it turned out to be a bargain.
After bringing him home, he had been delivering it to his hands and looking at him with great admiration for his beauty, all the time without knowing he had ashes.
However, Priscilla's confusion and agitation would not stop there. While thinking more about the idea that it was a memorial urn, he began to get incredibly sad.
After all, if it was a memorial urn, then it was the last memory of a person who had had a family and loved ones, and had left it in a second-hand store to buy it for two dollars! Priscilla was disconsolate at the idea that this moment has been left behind or lost by a person who lost it.
Find an owner
Finally, Priscilla and Kat decided that they were going to make an effort to discover who the heart originally belonged to. If it really was a memorial urn, then it was an incredibly important object, and they wanted to help give it back to whoever was missing it.
His first stop was the police. They were told about the urn and asked if anyone had reported the loss or disappearance of one. While the police had no clues, they promised to keep Priscilla and Kat up to date.
The next stop for Priscilla and Kat was the media. After all, if the police had no clues, they could still try to spread the word to a large audience and wait for someone to recognize the urn.
Priscilla and Kat believed that it was completely possible that someone could see a story about the heart and recognize it as their own. Although it was a remote possibility, they were willing to do whatever it took to bring the heart to its rightful owner.
On the waves
Priscilla and Kat spoke with different media in their quest to spread the word. As for the newspapers, they talked to the Boston Globe, which sent a couple of journalists to Priscilla's house to talk to her about her heart.
Although they were clearly skeptical at first, by showing them the ashes, they felt equally intrigued and interested in discovering who it belonged to. In addition, Priscilla and Kat spoke with WBZ-TV, a Boston-based local television station run by CBS.
Take to the web
As anyone does when they have something important to share today, Priscilla and Kat also turned to social networks to see if anyone knew anything about the heart.
Kat created a post on her page, detailing her mother's finding and the discovery they both made, asking if there was anyone who could know what the heart was or who it belonged to. Kat shared her and her mother's sadness at the idea that such an important article had been lost and her hope to return it.
In your neighborhood
While at the beginning there were no people who knew exactly where the heart came from, there was someone who offered a useful suggestion. They worked in a second-hand store, and told Priscilla and Kat that most of the donations made usually come from people in the local area.
As such, the chances that the person who donated the heart lived in Plymouth were quite high. This was encouraging for Priscilla and Kat, who felt that their success was much more likely if that were the case.
Priscilla and Kat closely watched her post and were surprised when someone else commented on it and explained that they also had a heart like Priscilla's!
This person, named Connie Whiteman Slatt, explained that he had also found a heart of almost the same design in a thrift store, and asked Priscilla and Kat to continue publishing updates. Priscilla wasn't sure if this meant that the heart was just a normal ornament, or if Connie also had a memorial urn in her hands.
Shortly after Connie commented on Kat's post, her comment received a response from someone who claimed to have also seen one of these ornaments, and they had a suggestion of where the ash could have come.
According to this person, his aunt had once possessed a heart like Priscilla's had, but instead of a memorial urn, the ash had come from the mountain. St. Helens instead. This was a new piece of intriguing information and excited Priscilla considerably.
Priscilla was extremely happy to hear that the ash in the heart of another person had actually come from the mountain. St. Helens, as it would mean that she did not have someone's lost memorial urn, but rather a normal trinket that anyone could have.
Although he couldn't be sure where the ash had come from without breaking his heart, Priscilla had felt much calmer about the origin and importance of this ornament.
Although no one has come forward to claim it yet, Priscilla hopes that the former owner of the heart will contact her one day. On the one hand, she is very interested in someone finally clarifying exactly what the heart is, be it a memorial urn or a normal trinket.
Also, if it is confirmed that the heart is a memorial urn, Priscilla wants to give it back to a person who certainly misses him a lot.
While waiting to see if its original owner ever appears, Priscilla currently keeps her heart hanging in her kitchen. Some people may see this as strange, since it could potentially be a memorial urn containing the ashes of someone who passed away.
However, despite all the mystery that surrounds him, Priscilla still thinks that the heart is an extremely beautiful trinket, and as such he keeps it where he can look at it every day.
Probably many people would feel inclined to get rid of the heart, having discovered what Priscilla and Kat did. After all, if you find a memorial urn by surprise, would you like to have it at home?
However, Priscilla has a very different opinion about it. He still thinks that the heart is beautiful and, most importantly, feels a connection with him now. Having fallen in love with this object only to discover that it could be a beautiful memorial urn, Priscilla feels the duty to keep it safe.
In the search
In spite of everything, Priscilla's roller coaster ride with her heart has not dampened her spirit for bargain hunting. We believe it is quite fair: after all, despite the mystery surrounding the heart, it is still a magnificent ornament that Priscilla found at a really excellent price.
If I could find offers like that every time I went to a thrift store, Priscilla would be ecstatic, although I could probably do without any future trinket that has a secret ash compartment.
If Priscilla's story has taught us anything, it's that you never really know what you're going to get when you go shopping second-hand.
After all, Priscilla picked up what she thought was just a regular trinket, only to discover that it could be an element of greater importance than she had ever imagined. The next time you pass a second-hand store, visit and see what you can find: the answer will surely surprise you.
