Scientists have measured the size of a giant monster asteroid and found it to be almost three times the size of Greater London.

The giant space rock is called Palma and would easily wipe out humanity and any other living species on Earth if it invaded us.

Fortunately, the stone is not on a collision course with our planet and is trapped in a predictable, stable orbit around the sun. It lives in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

We first discovered Palma in 1893, but its true size can now be uncovered after researchers have used a clever new method to figure out how tall it is.

Astronomers used the National Science Foundation's Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to observe how the stone passed in front of a distant galaxy called 0141 + 268, blocking the radio waves from a distance.

Normally, scientists observe asteroids because they block the light generated by distant galaxies, which is known as occultation.

Now, a team of starwars measures how the nature of radio waves received on Earth changed when the asteroid passed before 0141 + 268.

"This allowed us to narrow the shape of Palma with a single, short measurement," said Leonid Petrov, who works with the geodesy and geophysics lab at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

They discovered it was a massive 120 mile wide, though it is probably hollowed out on one side and is not a perfect circle. Greater London is about 45 miles wide.

"Observing an asteroid coverage with the VLBA has proven to be a very powerful asteroid sizing method," said Kimmo Lehtinen of the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute.
