Potsdam As the little sister of the federal capital, the people of Potsdam tend to be reluctant to see themselves, let alone want to emulate the Berliners in anything. It is all the more remarkable what is currently happening on the local real estate market: An alliance recently started collecting signatures for a rent cap. According to this, rents in the urban housing stock are to be increased by a maximum of one percent in five years.

Real estate consultant Anja Farke is hardly surprised by the move. “Potsdam is still in great demand, demand exceeds supply,” says the managing director of Engel & Völkers’ Potsdam location.
For years, the prices for rent and property in “Prussian Sylt” have been climbing, as the vdpResearch data for the Handelsblatt show.

It is difficult for normal earners to get hold of an apartment. This situation does not seem to affect the attractiveness of the city: Potsdam is growing. More than 180,000 people now live there, 40,000 more than at the time of the fall.
