In the US, the cost of physical exertion and repetitive motion to the automotive industry was estimated at $18 billion in 2019. The SERA tool (Safety & Ergonomic Risk Assessment, SERA) was developed by the BMW Group and uses scientifically validated methods for ergonomic whole-body assessments in the workplace. However, conventional ergonomic risk assessments can be time-consuming and subjective. This prompted the BMW Group to develop DWSM (Digital Workplace Stress Management), a system for digitally recording ergonomic assessments in the workplace. With regard to ergonomics in the workplace, the BMW Group chose the Movella solution with the motion detection system Awinda® and the proprietary software MVN Analyze® to enable faster objective assessments of workplace ergonomics in all international production facilities.

Motion capture tools provide information about the physical strains of employees working on the production lines. When the data indicates increased ergonomic stress, changes are made in the workplace to reduce physical stress.
