He visited his 78-year-old partner in one Rsa a Lana, in Alto Adige. Then, while they were sitting on a park bench of the structure, according to the reconstructions, he pulled a kitchen knife from his pocket and hit her in the heart. A man of 87 years old, Karl Engelmayr was arrested on suspicion of killing his partner, a guest of the nursing home for the elderly, Maria Waschgler.
The murder took place in the late afternoon of Sunday 18 July, in the garden of the Lorenzrhof retirement home, the only part that is again accessible for visits, which can only be accessed via the green pass, after the stop imposed by the pandemic. It is still not clear what prompted the man, an Austrian citizen who has been living in South Tyrol for some time to kill the woman who, before retirement, ran a grocery store in the town of Val d’Adige, just outside Merano.
Some nurses who tried to save the woman’s life immediately rushed to the scene, as well as an emergency doctor. In the meantime, some collaborators of the structure blocked the elderly attacker, who however did not offer resistance, until the arrival of the carabinieri.
