For years, scientists have wondered about the origin of the asteroid Kamo’oalewa.

This celestial body was discovered in 2016, and astronomers know that it has a relatively close orbit to Earth. Apart from that, not much is known.

Recent research, however, has added a clue to the mystery of its emergence: this asteroid could be part of Earth’s moon.

“It doesn’t look the way we think it would, if it were just a ‘normal’ asteroid,” said Benjamin Sharkey, astronomer at the University of Arizona and lead author of the new study published Thursday. Nature journal.
