Nasa and Google teamed up to create a virtual map to explore the red planet

Google and Nasa have teamed up to create a version of Google Maps for our heavenly neighbor Mars.

Google Mars is a website where people can experience the red planet without the six-month journey of 225 million kilometers.

The map shows the surface of the planet and points to mountains, volcanoes, craters and spacecraft.

The NASA satellite data, compiled by Arizona State University researchers, is one of the most accurate maps of the planet's surface ever created.

Three views show our planetary neighbor in great detail. The elevation map shows the topography of the planet, the visible map shows the highest resolution and an infrared map shows the different heat signature of the planet.

The interactive map is used in a similar way to Google Maps, allowing you to scroll, zoom and select different places.

With Google Earth Pro, users can also visit Mars with another incredibly detailed map that shows the surface of the planet in 3D.

The senior scientist Kamal Datta of the Nasa Special Research Center at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, said: "Current shielding technology makes it difficult to protect astronauts from the adverse effects of heavy ion radiation.

"Although there may be a way to use drugs to counter these effects, no such remedy has yet been developed.

"While short trips, like the times when astronauts went to the moon, may not expose them to harm, real concern is a permanent injury on long journeys, such as Mars or other space-based missions, that would take much longer . "

Mars has become the next big step for humanity's exploration of space.
