NASA's contest to name Mars Rover is reduced to 155 student entries

-

The judges working for NASA have reduced the list of possible names for the new space agency Mars rover to 155 student entries, different names that include everything from Dusty and Dreamer to Tenacity and Little Tinker. Any student who wins the grand prize will receive an invitation to see the launch of the new Mars rover into space at Cape Canaveral in July 2020.

"This rover is the first leg of a round trip mission to Mars that will improve understanding in key scientific fields such as astrobiology," Lori Glaze, director of NASA's Planetary Science Division, said in a statement. Press release. “This contest is a great way to involve the next generation and encourage careers in all STEM fields. The chosen name will help define the unique personality of this rover among our fleet of Martian spacecraft. "

NASA received more than 28,000 names and essay presentations from K-12 students in the US. UU. And it has been reducing them little by little. The next elimination round will bring the number of finalists to only nine options, and the public can vote online for their favorite later this month. The online survey will not be the last word on the name of the Mars rover, but NASA says "it will be a consideration in the final selection of names."

Some of the names are repeated because that is simply what happens when you get so many tickets. But the reasons behind each name given in each student's essay will finally help determine the winner.

This rover naming system is not exempt from precedents. In 2009, sixth grade student Clara Ma he came up with the name Curiosity For that famous rover. Ma is now part of the panel of experts who help choose the next round of winners.
