“National Organ Donation Day: promoting awareness and highlighting Chaco’s role in promoting donations”

The objective is to remember the importance of donating, within the framework of the National Organ Donation Day that is celebrated on May 30. From the State they highlighted the role of Chaco institutions to promote organ donation.

The Ministry of Health and the National Central Single Coordinating Institute for Ablation and Implantation (Incucai) launched a campaign on social networks under the slogan #SomosDonantes. The objective is to remember the importance of donating, within the framework of the National Organ Donation Day that is celebrated on May 30. From the entities they highlighted the role of Chaco institutions to promote organ donation.

As detailed by the entities, during the day testimonies of relatives of people who were “organ donors” will be disseminated on social networks. “Allowing those who were waiting for a transplant to recover their health and improve their quality of life,” the health portfolio said in a statement.

Testimonials from transplant recipients and members of the health system will also be shared, and the community will be called to participate, inviting them to share their messages on the importance of donating.

Numbers of donations so far this year

So far in 2023, 1,502 organ and cornea transplants have been performed. Thus, 776 patients on the waiting list received an organ transplant -674 from deceased donors and 102 from living donors- and 726 cornea transplants were performed.

For more information, in the first five months of 2023, 566 kidney transplants were performed, 150 liver, 35 cardiac, 12 lung, seven hepatorenal, four renal-pancreatic, one hepatointestinal, one cardiorenal, and 726 corneal transplants. Of the total number of transplants, 117 were pediatric (under 18 years of age).

These transplants were possible thanks to the completion of 641 donation processes, 294 organ donation processes and 347 corneas, which were carried out throughout the national territory: Buenos Aires (160), Misiones (60), the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (49), Corrientes (50), Santa Fe (49), Mendoza (47), Córdoba (43), Neuquén (32), Santiago del Estero (28), Entre Ríos (25), Tucumán (21), Jujuy (14), San Juan (11), Salta (12), Río Negro (10), Catamarca (seven), Chaco (five), La Pampa (five), La Rioja (four), San Luis (three), Tierra del Fuego (three), Formosa (two), Chubut (one).

The Program for the Implementation of Hospital Units for Procurement of Organs and Tissues (Uhprot), which was approved by Resolution 3,685/22 by the Minister of Health, Carla Vizzotti, offers health institutions a tool aimed at building services that comprehensively develop the procurement and transplant activity within hospitals. All in order to provide an answer to the more than 7,000 people who are waiting for an organ transplant and the 2,800 who are waiting for a corneal transplant.

Incucai promotes the implementation of the Program in stages, in national, provincial and municipal hospital establishments.

Since the beginning of the Program, in January of this year, six hospitals have already signed a management commitment and from the State they highlighted the contribution of the Chaco institutions for this.

They are the Julio C. Perrando Hospital (Chaco), the Emergency Hospital (Córdoba), the Alejandro Posadas National Hospital (Buenos Aires), the Eva Perón de Merlo Municipal Hospital (Buenos Aires), the Dr. Ramón Madariaga Acute Care School (Misiones) and Dr. Avelino Castelán (Chaco), the first pediatric hospital to join the program.
