Ukraine and Western countries recently agreed to discuss more weapons supplies including long-range missiles and warplanes. Experts predict that Russia will launch a new offensive before NATO assistance is converted into Ukraine’s combat capabilities on the battlefield.
In an interview on Sunday with the television channel RTP Portugal, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Rob Bauer said that the military bloc led by the United States (US) is ready for direct confrontation with Russia.
“This is an important signal to Russia… That we are ready if they decide to go after NATO. This is the red line. If there is a red line, it is Russia that crossed our border,” Bauer said.

At the same time, Russia has recently announced more military advances on the battlefield. According to news agency reports TASS, the settlement of Blagodatnoye near Soledar in eastern Ukraine has come under the control of Russian forces. The report cites the founder of the Russian mercenary group Wagner Group Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Cui Heng, research assistant from the Center for Russian Studies of East China Normal University, told Global TimesMonday (30/1/2023), that the performance of Russian troops in Ukraine has improved since Moscow appointed Chief of the General Staff General Valery Gerasimov to serve as commander of “special military operations” in Ukraine.
Bauer also acknowledged that the US-led military bloc should be better prepared because Russia currently has a military initiative.
Chinese military experts say this kind of concern among Ukraine and Western countries only led them to agree to talk about more offensive military supplies after they reached an agreement on the issue of supplying more advanced main battle tanks.
