[Reuters]–The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) announced on the 21st that Russia’s request for withdrawal from Romania and Bulgaria would not be accepted.

NATO spokesman Oana Lungesk said in a statement, “NATO will not give up its mutual defense capabilities, including troops deployed in eastern NATO.”

Russia has urged NATO to make a written commitment to suspend expansion and return it to its 1997 state. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said today that Russia’s requested security would include NATO’s withdrawal from Romania and Bulgaria, calling for the withdrawal of troops, weapons and other armaments from both countries.

Romania and Bulgaria have joined NATO since 1997. A spokesman for NATO said, “NATO will always respond to the deterioration of the security environment by strengthening collective self-defense,” and will continue to examine the need to strengthen the eastern part.
