In China, the authorities report significantly more cases of the new lung disease. According to the health authority, 830 people have now been shown to be infected. The death toll rose to 25.
The number of people killed in China by the novel corona virus has increased from 18 to 25. In addition, there are now 830 infected, said the Chinese health commission.
It also confirmed the first death outside of central Hubei Province. An 80-year-old man died in Hebei province, north of Beijing. He had been in the central Chinese city of Wuhan for two months to visit relatives and showed symptoms when he returned. The corona virus can cause cough, fever, difficulty breathing, but also pneumonia.
Wuhan is considered the starting point of the virus. According to health experts, it was first transmitted from wild animals that were illegally sold in Wuhan. It first appeared in December. There are now infected people in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam.
WHO observes outbreak every minute
The World Health Organization (WHO) decided on Thursday not to declare a global emergency. It was too early for that, said the chairman of the advisory board, Didier Houssin. But the situation is being taken seriously and the outbreak is being observed “every minute, every day,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
In order to curb the spread of the potentially fatal virus, China had previously largely blocked Wuhan and other cities from public transport. The flight and ferry operations were stopped, as well as the traffic of subways and buses.
The Chinese government wants to prevent a scenario similar to that in the 2002 and 2003 Sars pandemic. At that time, the respiratory disease, also caused by a corona virus, had spread from southern China to more than two dozen countries. More than 800 people died.
In the current case, however, the authorities reacted much faster. However, they fear that the virus could spread even faster in the coming days because the Chinese New Year is imminent, to which millions of Chinese will travel all over the country, fly abroad or receive visits from there. For this reason, many countries have already tightened their precautionary measures.
