Thousands of Colombians will be left without the possibility of obtaining visas to live permanently in the United States
The United States is one of the main destinations for Colombians who decide to emigrate from the country in search of a better educational, work or family future. Millions of compatriots decide to go to the United States in search of the famous “American dream” and they live mainly in Florida, New York and California.
The United States has always sought to promote immigration legally and that is why since 1990 there has been a law that regulates the visa lottery. This aims to give permanent legal residence to immigrants who meet the requirements of having a high school education, a minimum of two years of work experience in the United States and not having a judicial record.
The visa lottery has already started its process to choose the 55,000 people who will win these permanent visas. Among them, the United States Department of State excluded Colombian citizens from the possibility of participating in this visa lottery because there are already many Colombians residing there.
The State Department excluded all countries from which more than 50,000 migrants have been registered in the last five years, which is why the measure also excludes countries with a large colony of citizens in the United States, such as Brazil. , China, South Korea, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Venezuela, among others.
It is estimated that between 11 and 14 million citizens will participate, so the possibility of winning one of the 55,000 visas ranges between 0.39 and 0.5%.
