Florian Kohfeldt is back. The former Bremen coach is the first to lead training at VfL Wolfsburg. When he introduces him, he talks about his impressions so far and reveals that he was not able to keep to the first schedules.
Wolfsburg – Florian Kohfeldt was clearly in a good mood and full of zest for action at the start of his new professional life.
When he was officially presented as the coach of VfL Wolfsburg, the 39-year-old presented himself on the podium in the press room of the Volkswagen Arena and had one or two casual slogans ready. «Yes, excellent. I don’t have to adjust myself in the game, ”he said when asked about the club colors green and white, which he knows very well from his time as Bremen coach.
Before that, Kohfeldt had led a training session for his new team for the first time on Thursday morning. In the best autumn weather with bright sunshine, the successor to Mark van Bommel was greeted by the fans at the training ground with friendly applause. In the outfit of his new employer with the initials “FK” on his chest, he first took on the role of observer, then gave the first commands and spoke to the players.
“I talked a lot”
Communication is very important to him. The day before the first joint appearance on the pitch, Kohfeldt had already exchanged ideas with his players. “You might hear it a little in my voice: I talked a lot,” he said, adding with a smile: “We have exceeded one or the other time window.”
Get to know the team as quickly as possible and get a feel for the team structure – this or something like that could probably summarize Kohfeldt’s plan for the first few days of work. Born in Siegen, he started almost directly from his vacation in Wolfsburg. He has already gained initial knowledge. “I found a team that, in my opinion, is intact and that needs a certain orientation as to how we want to play the game,” said Kohfeldt.
In terms of play and tactics, he knows about the great opportunities that the Wolfsburg squad offers him. The top performers from last season, in which VfL qualified for the Champions League under Oliver Glasner, are still there. The players know each other and are well-rehearsed.
Good basis for an offensive game philosophy
In addition, the squad was strengthened on the offensive by Lukas Nmecha, Luca Waldschmidt and the firm commitment of Maximilian Philipp. Unlike in Bremen, Kohfeldt finds good conditions in Wolfsburg to realize his offensive game philosophy.
However, VfL recently appeared unusually insecure. Among other things, mistakes in the defense out of the game and weaknesses in opposing standard situations, combined with manageable goal danger, meant that the Lower Saxony won none of their last eight competitive games. Kohfeldt wants to arouse “dynamism” and “intensity” in the work against the ball more strongly. Instead of static possession football, he is also concerned with “offering offensive solutions that should be very dynamic”.
At first, however, he doesn’t have much time to practice new things. The first full week was tough with three games in eight days. Wolfsburg will compete at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, followed by the premier class duel with Red Bull Salzburg on Tuesday. Four days later, the Volkswagen Club welcomes FC Augsburg.
After the coaching change, Sport Managing Director Jörg Schmadtke takes the team on board. “I expect the dedication and passion from the past, I expect intensity in everything we do,” the 57-year-old was quoted by the “Sportbuzzer”. «I expect that we will work our way out of this problem area together. And I expect the team to be unreservedly ready to give everything! ”
In any case, Kohfeldt is confident. “I think it can be a very promising time here,” he said.
