The Peruvian police temporarily arrested five tourists on Tuesday for allegedly gaining access to the ruined city of Machu Picchu. The city, built by the Incas in the 15th century, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous tourist attractions in South America. The group is said to have damaged masonry during their visit. A tourist is also said to have "done business" amidst the sacred ruins, the authorities said. POLICE OFFICIAL, VICTOR PATINO "Manuel Gomez from Argentina is currently in a hearing in Machu Picchu for crimes against the nation's cultural heritage, and a sentence is also to be imposed. Other people, including those of French nationality, are also involved." The tourists were expelled. Machu Picchu is visited by over a million tourists a year.
