News | The municipal council of Lille votes a measure to boycott the World Cup in Qatar

During Lille’s municipal council meeting yesterday, elected officials adopted a declaration marking the City’s disapproval of the hosting of the football World Cup in Qatar (November 20 – December 18). “Unanimously, the municipal council of Lille voted this evening a declaration disapproving of the holding of the Football World Cup in Qatar, which is nonsense with regard to human rights, the environment and sport. We will not broadcast any matches on a giant screen.”said in a tweet the socialist mayor of Lille, Martine Aubry.

Several other cities have already announced their intention not to relay the event, in particular Strasbourg. The green mayor of the city declared a few days ago to 20 Minutes : “Strasbourg, European capital, seat of the European Court of Human Rights, cannot decently condone this mistreatment, cannot turn a blind eye when human rights are thus flouted”.
