Nice supporters mock Sala’s death

A Nice’s victory over Saint-Étienne, this Wednesday, for the 36th round of Ligue 1, was marred by shocking chants from the Nice Ultras, who mocked the death of Argentine Emiliano Sala, a former Nantes forward who died in a plane crash in 2019.

In a press conference after the match, Nice coach Christophe Galtier condemned the insults in the stands. Last Saturday, Nantes won the Coupe de France against Nice, after a 1-0 victory. In the tournament final, Emiliano Sala was honored during the ninth minute of the match.

The song, sung nine minutes into the first half by Nice fans, said: “It’s an Argentine who doesn’t know how to swim well… Emiliano, you’re still underwater…” On its official website, the club issued a statement reprimanding the attitude of these supporters and asked for respect for Sala and his family.
