Six-time ATP champion Nick Kyrgios is not lacking in self-confidence heading into the grass-court season as he has declared himself to be the best player on the surface. Kyrgios, former world No. 13, is not playing on clay this season, but he should return to competition in early June, during the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.
Kyrgios has never won an ATP title on grass, but he has reached two semi-finals on grass and once a quarter-final at Wimbledon. “I mean, on the grass, I would say the best is me,” Kyrgios told the Sydney Morning Herald.
Kyrgios has fun on the court in 2022
At the start of this season, Kyrgios became a Grand Slam champion after winning the Australian Open men’s doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis.
“Something about this year has just been different,” Kyrgios said. “I’ve played five or six tournaments and I’ve done well in almost every one I’ve played and I’ve beaten a lot of the best players in the world this year.
I think it’s more of a year of resurgence, I go out there and show people that I don’t have to play all the time, that I can still be at the top of the game.”
‘I’m enjoying it and doing things my way’ Kyrgios has been accompanied by his girlfriend Costen Hatzi this season and he seems happy on and off the court. Earlier this year, Kyrgios opened up about the depression phase he went through a few years ago and encouraged all those who are struggling to keep fighting and that better days are sure to come.
“I play for a lot of people. I feel like I’m very endearing,” Kyrgios noted. “A lot of kids and people look up to me when I play. If someone like me can go that far and achieve what I’ve achieved, I think that gives them a lot of hope.
Obviously, I’m 27 now, so I have to earn some money, but I’m having a lot of fun; the tennis circuit, traveling around the world, it’s a pretty nice lifestyle. I want to enjoy it while I can”
