With the holidays approaching, Nintendo is trying to do everything it can to sell as many game consoles as possible in the coming weeks. That alone will not make up for the disappointing sales figures of this year; Nintendo lowers its full-year sales forecast by 10 percent to 19 million units.
Many companies worldwide are suffering from the shortage of chips. Nintendo says it can make fewer game consoles as a result.
There are now three versions of the Nintendo Switch available. The latest version with an OLED screen was sold more than 3.5 million times in the first half of 2022. The normal version of the Switch sold 2.2 million times and the Switch Lite 920,000.
In terms of game sales, the game console manufacturer did a lot better. Nintendo sold more than 95.4 million games in the past six months, 1.5 million more than in the same period last year.
Splatoon 3 was very popular last year. That Nintendo game has sold more than 7.9 million copies. Nintendo Switch Sports in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were sold 6.2 and 3.1 million times respectively.
Nintendo saw its operating profit rise last quarter to 118.7 billion yen (809 million euros). In the same period last year, it was 100.2 billion yen. The full-year operating profit forecast remains unchanged at 500 billion yen.
The game console maker, which is based in Kyoto, has raised its forecast for net profit for this fiscal year to 400 billion yen. Nintendo is benefiting from the weaker yen, but also from the growth in the number of games sold.
The value of the Japanese yen is at its lowest level in more than 30 years against the US dollar. That is beneficial for Nintendo. The company gets 80 percent of its sales outside of Japan. The depreciation of the yen makes the company’s products cheaper outside Japan.
