North Korea to skip Asian Under-23 Championship and Asian Women’s Cup in 2022

SEOUL, Jul 29 (Yonhap) – North Korea have withdrawn from the Asian Under-23 Championship in Uzbekistan and the Asian Women’s Cup in India, both scheduled for the next year, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced on Thursday.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has noted the withdrawal of the DPRK Football Association from qualifying competitions for the AFC Asian Under-23 Football Championship in Uzbekistan in 2022 and the FIFA World Cup. ‘AFC women’s Asian football in India in 2022,’ the confederation said. The DPRK is the official name of North Korea, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The AFC said it will hold a draw on August 11 to keep the number of teams in all groups balanced for the AFC Asian Under-23 Championship qualifiers.

“The results of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifying draw in India, held on June 24, 2021, remain unchanged,” he said.

The 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup also serves as the Asian qualifier for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and Australia.
