 North Sea

P apenburg (dpa / lni) – In reverse gear and with two tugs, the new cruise ship «Norwegian Bliss» today drives from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg across the Ems towards the North Sea. The ship of the US shipping company Norwegian Cruise Line is expected Thursday morning in Eemshaven (Netherlands). It is the first ship this year. The dock lock in Papenburg The “Norwegian Bliss” is supposed to happen around 8 pm today. The fact that the ship makes the crossing with the tail ahead, has proved due to the better maneuverability, the shipyard. With environmentalists, the Ems overpasses meet with strong criticism. The river has a major silt problem due to straightening and deepening in the past, according to the citizens’ initiative “Save the Ems”. The silt must be dredged regularly for shipping. In addition, the necessary impoundments flushed salty North Sea water into the river Ems. Every transfer of a Meyer cruise ship worsened the condition of the Ems. On the North Sea, the ship completes the technical and nautical testing for several days. The first guests are expected to arrive on board in mid-April 2018. The “Norwegian Bliss” can accommodate around 4,000 passengers. It is the 13th cruise ship that built the shipyard for Norwegian Cruise Line.
