Search continues for Texas inmate serving life sentence for manslaughter who escaped from a bus after stabbing the driver. Gonzalo López, 46, escaped Thursday after subduing the driver, whose life is not at risk from injuries, said Jason Clark, chief of staff for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
López was convicted in 2016 of murdering a man on the Texas-Mexico border. López escaped in León County, a rural area between Dallas and Houston. On Friday, classes at the nearby Centerville Independent School District were canceled as a precaution. The Leon County Police Department said multiple agencies are involved in the search, including aircraft from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
About 16 prisoners were aboard the bus, but none of the others escaped, Clark said. Leon County has about 16,000 residents and is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of the state prison. According to prison records, Lopez had been held in Gatesville, more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from where authorities were looking.
