Novosibirsk scientists found a new strain of tick-borne encephalitis virus

Scientists of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the SB RAS have discovered a new strain of tick-borne encephalitis virus – it was called Obskoye. It is reported “Science in Siberia” .
By now, there are three subtypes of tick-borne encephalitis virus: eastern, European and Siberian. The recently discovered Obskaya strain corresponds to the last subtype, widely distributed in the Novosibirsk region, but differs from already known variants of the virus. “The difference between subtypes is 12% in the nucleotide sequence. It turned out that the new strain, in its genetic structure, is close to this border: it is, of course, a Siberian subtype, but more similar to other types. He has a unique structure of proteins – more precisely, some variants of amino acid residues in them have not been described before, which can influence the biological properties of this variant, “the scientific associate of the Institute, Sergei Tkachev, quotes Science in Siberia.
Scientists do not know yet whether the existing vaccines created on the basis of the Far Eastern or European strain will be effective against Ob obesity.
