Düsseldorf Easter holidays at home? Then off to the zoo, it’s particularly nice there in spring because there are so many cute baby animals. North Rhine-Westphalia’s most popular zoos at a glance.

Nowhere else are there as many zoos and animal gardens concentrated as in North Rhine-Westphalia. They are committed to preserving endangered animal species and are a popular destination for families. Here we have put together what there is to marvel at, stroke and get to know.

entry Adults pay 23 euros (concessions 17 euros), children 11 euros. Day tickets always include a free ticket in the VRS area. It is therefore advisable to buy the tickets online in advance.

opening hours The zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dogs are not permitted. Exception: assistance dogs.

Corona rules are abolished in the Cologne Zoo, which means: 3G and mask requirements in the animal houses are no longer applicable.

For children The huge adventure playground in Cologne Zoo is the highlight for many children. In the petting zoo, among other things, nine kids can currently be admired and stroked.

Animal offspring The white camel and the little giant anteater are the newcomer stars. The elephant girl Leev Marie, who is now almost two years old, is still popular. The baby meerkats are particularly funny.

You should have seen it Feeding the sea lions. They perform amazing tricks and can even imitate a shark. In the Arnulf-und-Elizabeth-Reichert-Haus the sloths are dangling right over your head. Other animals from South America also live there, for example salt cats, silver monkeys or the globe armadillo. The elephant park and the hippodom, where hippos and Nile crocodiles splash in the water, are also real highlights. And of course the Ferris wheel in front of the zoo.

entry Adults pay 17.50 euros, children and young people from three to 17 years ten euros. Dogs are allowed in the zoo for five euros. There are also some discounts. The zoo recommends purchasing tickets online in advance to reduce queues at the ticket offices.
opening hours The ticket offices are open from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. The zoo closes at 7pm; the animal houses at 6.30 p.m.
Corona rules Masks are compulsory (FFP2 mask or surgical mask from the age of six) in the animal houses, the dolphinarium, on the accessible animal facilities and indoors such as the toilets. In addition, a distance of 1.5 meters from other visitors and the animals should be kept.
For children The zoo advertises that it is an amusement park for the whole family. And that’s true. In addition to the animals in the petting zoo, there are also playgrounds for children, a pirate ship and a low-rope course.
Animal offspring Long eyelashes, wide eyes and dark brown fur: Two little Dahomey dwarf cattle are currently growing up in the petting zoo. And in the monkey house, a snow-white colobus monkey cub was born at the end of January. According to the zoo, this is a great success for the preservation of the endangered primate species.
You should have seen it The tropical hall Rio Negro. There you can immerse yourself in the world of the Amazon under a large dome. Animals can be viewed underwater through a panorama window. Lion tamarins and marmosets live in the trees.

Corona rules The mask requirement continues. It is valid in all buildings of the zoo as well as in the gorilla garden.
For children The zoo also offers beautiful children’s playgrounds for the little visitors – including a water play facility.
Animal offspring A newborn two-toed sloth in the rainforest house. The father is a real celebrity. The sloth named Jan is the oldest of its kind in the world at 52 years old. Due to its old age, the animal is noted in the Guinness Book of Records
Must have seenin The butterfly jungle with up to 200 butterflies from South America, Southeast Asia, Costa Rica and Africa buzzing around under a dome.

entry Adults pay 18.50 euros (reduced 16.50 euros), children 1.70 euros. Visiting is possible without booking an online ticket, but the zoo continues to offer them to better distribute customer flows.

Corona rules Masks are compulsory (medical or FFP2 mask) in all animal houses as well as in the sanitary facilities and zoo catering as well as in the souvenir shop “Zoo-Truhe”. No proof of vaccination or test is required for entry.

For children The JuniorZoo is a highlight for children. Visitors are allowed to groom the animals and, if they wish, help to clean the enclosure. Small brooms, rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows are available especially for children. There is also a large playground and a water playground where the little ones can splash around.

Animal offspring On March 8th two little Asian golden cats were born. In addition, twelve young African pygmy goats have conquered the entire outdoor area of the JuniorZoo and can be observed there and carefully stroked. There are also offspring among the collared peccaries, the yaks and the endangered Babirusa.

You should have seen it With “Aralandia”, the zoo has one of the largest walk-in macaw aviaries in Europe. Hyacinth macaws, sun conures, Chilean flamingos and pudus can be seen in the free-flight aviary, which is almost 1100 square meters in size and up to ten meters high. There is also the largest lion enclosure ever built in a German zoo, measuring one hectare.

Reduced after-work ticket from 4 p.m.: adults ten, children 8.50, pupils and students 9 euros. A service fee of EUR 0.50 per ticket applies to all tickets. opening hours Daily from 9 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., the adventure worlds of Alaska, Africa and Asia close 30 minutes before the zoo closes.

Corona rules Masks are compulsory in closed rooms (medical and FFP2 masks, from the age of six), outdoors where the distance rule cannot be observed. The 3G rule for entry does not apply. The ELE Lemureninsel and some gastronomic facilities are closed.

For children In addition to the 850 square meter indoor playground “Dragon’s Land” with tree huts, climbing trapezes and a pirate ship, there is an adventure playground, a climbing playground and a water playground where you can also pan for gold.

Animal offspring In October last year the three lionesses Malaika, Kumani and Jamila were born, who are still very playful. On February 25, chimpanzee Jahaga gave birth to a male. The animal keepers from the Africa World of Adventure have given the little one the name Lisoko.

You should have seen it The special features of the Africa, Asia, Alaska and Grimberger Hof theme worlds include the underwater glass tunnel in the sea lion enclosure, the 3000 square meter bear enclosure or a simulated ride in an igloo on an ice floe, the Alaska Ice Adventure.

For children In the horse park, children can pet horses, donkeys and goats in the enclosures. The guinea pigs in their miniature habitat are also a highlight.

Animal offspring The youngest offspring is already a star: Penguin “Picassa” doesn’t paint pictures, but waddles them. The prints are now ready for a museum and can be admired in the Picasso Museum after a visit to the zoo.

You should have seen it “Robbenhaven” is one of the largest sea lion enclosures in Europe. For a visit to the Allwetterzoo you can order a picnic basket, which can be picked up in the zoo restaurant.

For children There is a lot to observe: in 140 aquariums, terrariums and large-scale facilities, there is a multitude of marine and desert animals, freshwater and tropical forest dwellers.

Animal offspring There is actually always one in one of the tanks and terrariums. Frogs, toads and salamanders migrated to their spawning grounds as early as March.

You should have seen it The newly designed Amazon panorama pool and the intelligent octopus Ursula. And on a tour of the 25 themed rooms, visitors can follow the emergence of life: from water and its spread in the sea to the colonization of all habitats on land.
