NU and Indonesia Play Important Roles in Maintaining Tolerance, Expert: Religious Learning Must be Moderate

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The “Religion Twenty” (R20) forum is a momentum for the world to unite to maintain harmony and Indonesia has an important role in religious life so that understanding and study of Islamic studies and other religions in educational institutions, from elementary to tertiary levels must be strengthened with tolerance, moderation and strengthening shared values.

“For me, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Indonesia have an important role in this forum because NU is the largest organization in the world,” said Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta Postgraduate Director Asep Saepudin Jahar in Jakarta, Saturday, November 5, 2022.

Asep revealed that the main issue of the R20 Forum was about understanding, experiencing and directing religious life.

Asep, who was one of the representatives at R20, explained that the forum discussed several issues, including religion must be a strengthening value for society for peace and protecting humanity.

Then, said Asep, differences in religious teachings are seen as the theological uniqueness of each by prioritizing the values ​​of civility and justice that must be realized. “For me, the R20 and G20 Forums are important moments for Indonesian Islam for the world as an example of a harmonious life,” said the Professor of Sociology of Islamic Law at UIN Jakarta.

Therefore, Asep stated that the understanding and study of Islamic studies and other religions in educational institutions, from elementary to tertiary levels, must be strengthened by the concept of understanding tolerance, moderation and strengthening shared values.

In addition, according to Asep, educational institutions under the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Religion must unite in formulating religious learning, understanding religion that is inclusive, moderate and tolerant.

“Therefore, religious education needs special attention because it has an impact on social life,” said Asep.

Asep also added that Indonesia must present a model of religious life that is plural and harmonious in the important moments of the R20 and G20 Forums in Bali. Globally, he continued, Indonesia must promote world peace in all matters, including religion, economy and politics.

“Well, UIN and the Ministry of Religion must take this moment at the forefront,” said Asep.
R20 is a forum initiated by the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) as a series of events from the G20 and aims to bridge the concept of traditional interfaith dialogue that has lasted for decades with results and goals that are considered concrete.

R20 Forum in Nusa Dua Bali

R20 itself will be filled by participants from various countries. In total, there were 464 people and 170 of them from abroad who came from five continents. The leaders of these religions, sects, and faiths will discuss how religion can effectively contribute to the improvement of the global political economy.

The forum will take place on 2-3 November 2022 in Nusa Dua Bali, Indonesia. In addition, R20 is also to prevent concepts or initiatives that are wrong or suspicious, or that cause clashes between civilizations and cultures.

R20 discusses five major themes, namely, first, historical pain, truth-telling, reconciliation, and forgiveness. Second, identify and embrace millennial values ​​from major world religions and civilizations.

Third, the values ​​that need to be released by each tradition to ensure that religion functions as a true solution and not a problem. Fourth, is about values ​​that need to be developed to ensure peaceful coexistence and fifth is spiritual ecology.
