Number of children killed in Texas shooting rises to 19 | The World | D.W.

At least 19 children were killed in the shooting perpetrated by a young man at a school in the town of Uvalde, Texas (USA) in which a teacher and the aggressor also died, they reported Tuesday night (05.24.2022) state authorities.

With this, according to data from the authorities, at least 21 people died in the massacre: 19 children, a teacher and the attacker, who was killed by the Police.

According to the Texas authorities, the assailant, Salvador Ramos, 18, burst in with a handgun, and possibly a rifle, at around 11:37 a.m. local time (6:37 p.m. CET) at the Uvalde school, about 133 kilometers from San Antony.

The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, said in an appearance before the media that there are reports that the alleged perpetrator had shot his grandmother before going to school.

In an address to the nation immediately after arriving from a tour of Asia, US President Joe Biden wondered when his country will face the “gun lobby.”

Biden declares himself “disgusted”

“As a nation we have to ask ourselves when in God’s name are we going to stand up to gun lobbyists,” Biden lamented, visibly affected.

“I’m sick and tired,” said the 79-year-old president, who was briefed on the tragedy on Air Force One, returning from a diplomatic tour of Asia.

“We have to make it clear to every elected official in this country: It’s time to act,” he said.

“Enough is enough,” Vice President Kamala Harris had said shortly before, urging “have the courage” to do something to prevent this from happening.

The president ordered that the country’s flags fly at half-staff at the White House and at all federal buildings, military installations and warships until sunset on May 28.

This Tuesday is the second deadliest school shooting in the last decade, after the one that occurred in 2012 at the Sandy Hook school in Newton, Connecticut, where 26 people were killed.
