ON VIDEO | Spectator attacks 17-year-old referee at soccer game

In the middle of a 14-year-old soccer game, a spectator came down from the bleachers to attack the referee on Saturday in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.

A visibly frustrated spectator punched the 17-year-old referee hard, before he was tackled to the ground by other spectators in the game. An individual filmed the attack.

The game took place at the Dollard 2 field, and it was the opening game of the summer season for the city’s young soccer players.

Listen to Alexandre Dubé at the microphone of Mario Dumont on QUB radio:

The referee was injured by the punch, but is recovering quietly. According to his boss, director of refereeing Robert D’Alesio, he still does not know if he will continue his job as a referee.

“He was under a lot of pressure, he was very stressed,” Mr. D’Alesio said of his employee. The victim’s family are considering whether to file a complaint with the police.

On Monday, Soccer Quebec issued a press release denouncing the attack.

“What was important for us in the first place was to make sure that the young referee was doing well in the circumstances and that he was well surrounded, declared the director general of the federation Mathieu Chamberland. But I unreservedly denounce this aggression and I remind you that there is no reason, really no reason, which justifies the attack of an official, it is zero tolerance.
